Brown hybrid egg-layers
|
| |

These hens are commercial type layers that have been bred to be a very reliable layer of brown eggs. They are a cross of the Rhode Island Red and Leghorn breeds. If you want a good reliable layer, these are the hens to choose.
AVAILABILITY: Available in 2010, ONLY as part of our 2 and 4 hen starter packs
|
| |
The following hens are pure-breeds and are bred in small numbers each year. They are not as reliable layers as the hybrid hens, but each of them offer something different in terms of looks, characteristics or egg colour.

Pure breed - lavender araucanas
|
| |

Araucanas lay a beautiful bluey-green egg. They are one of the rarer chicken breeds and their eggs are very-much sought after (see the blue egg in the picture above for comparison). The lavender araucanas are a lovely grey colour and a very 'different' looking chicken. The hens are quite small when compared to some of the other breeds.
Cost: €10 at 6 weeks old, €20 at 18 weeks old (point of lay) AVAILABILITY: Email us to add your name to the waiting list.

Pure breed - cuckoo marans
|
| |

Marans hens lay a very deep brown egg. We keep cuckoo (black and white speckled) marans. They are also a good dual purpose bird and were traditionally bred for their eggs and meat.
Cost: €10 at 6 weeks old, €20 at 18 weeks old (point of lay)
